Timeless Style: A Guide to Classic Wardrobe Staples for the Modern Gentleman

Classic wardrobe staples for the modern gentleman typically include items like a well-fitted suit, dress shirts, chinos, a versatile blazer, a quality white t-shirt, leather dress shoes, a classic watch, and a leather belt. These timeless pieces can be mixed and matched to create various stylish outfits for different occasions.

But wait just one second Carl, what do you mean by classic when you talk about men's fashion?

In terms of men's fashion, "classic" refers to clothing items, styles, or designs that have stood the test of time and remain relevant and stylish across different eras. Classic pieces are characterised by their timeless appeal, simplicity, and versatility, making them suitable for various occasions and easily adaptable to different trends. These items often have clean lines, neutral colours, and a traditional aesthetic that ensures they remain fashionable for years to come.

But I'm on a budget Carl. I don't think I can afford luxury high end classic staples on top of all my subscriptions to magazines I don't read. How do I build a classic wardrobe on the cheap? Well there is always brands like Zara, H&M, BooHoo, Amazon (yuk) but I strongly urge you to source affordable and sustainable garments that will last. You will reap the benefits ten-fold as these staples will not go out of style any time soon.

Here are some of the brands I would encourage you to seek for individual pieces.

A well-fitted suit: Of course there is bespoke, Savile Row if you're in London but also Chris Kerr and Mark Powell in Soho respectively. You have the likes of Timothy Everest operating out of Grey Flannel on Chiltern Street. But for those on a budget I suggest you find a suit through an online source with a reputable image. Why not Magee1866? Over 150 years in business providing some of the finest Donegal Fabrics from their flagship mill out of Donegal Ireland itself.

Afterwards have your tailor or dry cleaner do some adjustments and get that fit near to perfect as possible.

Dress shirts: I'm practically giving these dress shirts away on my own personal e-commerce site, Hawkins & Shepherd. I'm streamlining my inventory and you can be the beneficiary of some massive stock reduction on dress shirts. Baseline price £15.

Chinos: I've had a great relationship with M&S over the years. They've forwarded on many samples of chinos from their various seasonal collections and I can attest to how comfy they are. The value can't be beat, and it feels great to support such a great British institution. Stretch chinos available from their site for as little as £25.

A versatile blazer: For me a versatile blazer has to be navy coloured. You can build so many looks around a navy blazer and if you have blue or dark eyes then it should pair seamlessly. Once again look no further than M&S that have one currently for £50.

A quality white t-shirt: You can find white tee shirts more or less anywhere. And for a pinch. However, the SANVT white tee shirt has been my go to for many a year now. Strong crew neck collar and quality feel to the fabric really sets this apart. A little pricier than normal at £45.

Leather dress shoes: As you may have already discovered on a previous post, I found some amazing faux crocodile leather dress shoes that will add a little spice to your black tie event. Super comfy and very unique by Justin Reess. I got a discounted rate as I bought two pairs at a promo stall at the Royal Windsor Horse racing event. But expect to pay something circa £90-100 per pair. Well worth it.

A classic watch: I’ve accumulated a fair number of watches over the years and have become somewhat of an expert in this field. When shopping online for a watch it is hard to compare the differences as you’re cross-referencing written facts. When you physically have a collection side by side and you’re holding one watch in one hand and another in the other, it becomes somewhat easier to pick a favourite. A fashion watch is something affordable, retails from approximately £50-£250 in price and therefore you may have more than one in your watch collection. Swapping them out depending on the style and colour of your outfit. Check out my list of 10 affordable watches in a post here

A leather belt: Something unusual, but how about a belt made from cork? I have two from Watson & Wolf and can tell you they are my go to belts every time I switch between brown or navy shoes. From their website:

As a fabric, cork is durable and retains its natural look and feel.  This material is environmentally friendly, hypoallergenic, water resistant and stain resistant as well as easily cleaned and long lasting.

Affordable, British and available in many colours for £42.
