Hugo Dark Blue by Hugo Boss: How a Fragrance achieved a Cult Like Status
You can probably tell by the photos that I've been getting plenty of use out of this Hugo Dark Blue by Hugo Boss. I recently picked this up on my travels and have been wearing it non-stop. The other half even insists that I spray a whole load on before we go to bed. It's a truly nostalgic scent launched way back in 1999. It's an Oriental Spicy fragrance for men created by Alain Astori and Beatrice Piquet. Many of you my age or younger might even remember getting this as your very first luxury fragrance. Because 50 pounds was a lot of money back then, even though it's available now for £35. (Link at bottom). Let's get into the profile shall we?
● Top notes are Ginger, Grapefruit, Orange, Lime and Lemon;
● Middle notes are Cypress, Mahogany, Cardamom, Geranium and Sage;
● Base notes are Vanilla, Cedar, Benzoin, Vetiver and Patchouli.
Thoughts
It's awesome, mind blowing, fresh and also long lasting. As I mentioned previously it's one of my go to scents when it came out, that smells amazing and lasted for a long time for me in the early 2000s. It’s in the shape of a shaker because it smells like a cocktail with blue curaçao. (who knew that eh?). I like the vanilla benzoin base playing with the citrus top notes sort of makes it smell like a vanilla coke. Can wear it all year round. It’s classified as an "Oriental Spicy" fragrance, which I completely agree with because it’s a blend of so many different notes.
The only thing that lets this fragrance down is the plastic cap. It feels a little cheap and clunky. Plus the grey on blue does nothing for me. They could have made it white or red to bring out the lettering on the bottle. But these are just aesthetics. And not that important. I like the fact that this aftershave has taken on a cult-like status. Reminds me of Sedley, an eau de parfum with a true olfactory-vibe.
Where to Wear
And this is the kicker, it's universal, without being bland. I don't know why they don't make this more readily available. It can be tricky to track down. You might find it at airports for sure, cruise ships or keen an eye out even at TJ MAXX or places like that.
